REMODEL OF A DETACHED BUNGALOW

This scheme was to convert a small two bedroom bungalow into a substantial modern family home on the outskirts of London. The design takes the suburban ‘chalet’ bungalow typology and adding a twist, resulting in a deceptively large 5 bedroom house. Services have been upgraded including, underfloor heating throughout, a thermal store heating tank, solar thermal panels, rainwater harvesting tank and heat recovery ventilation system. All the lighting is low energy and the house has been fully data cabled.

As the footprint was extended considerably the challenge was to provide opportunity for day-lighting particularly at the heart of the house. This was achieved in various ways both through layout and careful consideration of skylight placement. Roof windows were also used to facilitate airflow throughout the house using stack ventilation.
